Meet the cowboys at Cubby Bakehouse drive-through during lockdown

Approaching this Chinderah business may look a bit like a Western stand-off, but the owners promise these cowboys are all friendly.

Approaching the Cubby Bakehouse this week might have looked like a Western stand-off, but the owners promise their cowboys are all friendly.

The Chinderah cafe has introduced a drive-through to wrangle in customers, with cowboys Cinnamon, Wood and Nutmeg taking the orders.

Cowboy Cinnamon, more commonly known as co-owner Dan Cresswell, said the dress up was for a bit of positivity in tough times.

“When we get knocked down at Cubby, or anywhere across our businesses, we try to act as quickly as possible,” Mr Cresswell said.

“You can only serve people a certain way – so we try to think outside the square.”

The team did a drive-through at the store on Chinderah Bay Dr during Covid as last year as a way to keep some business rolling.

“Because it’s such a down time we though ‘how we could incorporate such a funny and positive thing?’ and said ‘why don't we just dress up like morons and do our best to put smiles on faces?’” Mr Cresswell said.

It’s been somewhat of a success, with children specifically coming in to see ‘Wood’ who wears a costume like Woody from Toy Story and some people getting a big surprise mistaking the drive-through for a Covid testing clinic.

“One of the best parts is you get someone who doesn’t know there’s a drive though and makes their way in and it’s just us being morons on the road,” he said.

Business has been tough at the cafe with border restrictions meaning some staff can’t get to work, but Mr Cresswell said they have tried to redeploy staff at their other Gold Coast businesses, Bam Bam Bakehouse in Mermaid Beach and Custard Canteen at Tallebudgera Creek.

Another challenge has been the pace of the drive-through, with the full Cubby menu still on offer and staff keeping up to their high standards.

But with another week of lockdown announced Mr Cresswell said the drive-through will continue hinting at a new theme coming.

“There will be lots of colour, lots of speed, lots of power and lots of laughs,” he said.

The Cubby drive-through is open daily from 5.30am to 2.30pm.
