A coffee roastery located in an old post office in Uki has created a brew that’s the first of its kind.
Introducing Alt Coffee by Bastion Lane Espresso ‒ a coffee roasted exclusively for use with milk alternatives like soy, almond, oat, macadamia and coconut.
Its smooth acidity means none of the usual “splitting” that non-dairy milks can cause.
The coffee, organic and ethically sourced from Arabica coffee beans in Peru, is described as deep, rich and chocolatey, boasting roasted hazelnuts with a full body and smooth mouthfeel.
All BLE coffee is hand-roasted in small batches in the Roast Office, in the 1909 heritage-listed Uki Post Office located in the idyllic village of Uki.
Founder Gary Wall is passionate about coffee and spends his days roasting, testing and tasting to ensure customers get the best possible roasts.
He oversees every step of the entire process.
“We are on a mission to continually evolve, measuring our impact and looking for better solutions to our everyday tasks,” Mr Wall said.
“By working together and supporting our partners across the supply chain, we strengthen our relationships, build expertise and contribute towards placing Bastion Lane Espresso speciality coffee and culture on the map.
“We pride ourselves on the exceptional quality coffee we source, buy, import, roast, and deliver nationally.”
Mr Wall began with a career in TV before moving to become a “roast master”.
After completing an MBA in 2017, Mr Wall purchased a working post office; with a plan to run it in tandem with a coffee roastery, which some regarded as “mildly bonkers”.
The large restoration project commenced and once the beautiful 1909 building was restored, the La Marzocco Strada espresso machine and Diedrich coffee roaster were installed, and the Bastion Lane Espresso Bar opened its doors in January 2018.
To celebrate the brand name, which in medieval times meant a section of a castle that serves as protection, the laneway between the Uki Public Hall and the Uki Post Office was officially named Bastion Lane.
The new coffee is available in a variety of grinds and starts from $15 for 250g.
