WHEN Lisa Oldfield saw a picture drawn by her young son Harry, she thought he’d sketched a bloated tick.
In fact, he’d drawn a picture of his mum.
“All I saw was this giant tummy and stick-thin arms and legs,” the former TV presenter said.
“When I realised it was me, I made up my mind I was going to have liposuction.”
Last Thursday, Oldfield, wife of radio host and former politician David Oldfield, had 5.5 litres of fat extracted from her waist and back in a procedure that took six hours.
With trademark candour she posted a picture of the extracted fat just hours after the operation, captioning it: “Now I have a waist!”.
“I’ve always been the classic apple shape and, after having kids, I just couldn’t shift the tummy fat,” the mother of Harry, four, and Bert, two, said.
“My arms and legs stayed the same size, but I carry weight on my tummy and breasts and even though I cut down on alcohol and watched what I ate, I just couldn’t shift it.”
Although she’s outwardly confident — still appearing regularly on Channel Nine — Oldfield says she hated seeing pictures of herself.
“I’d taken to wearing A-line dresses and couldn’t wear anything figure-hugging. When I turned 40 in January, David wanted to throw a big party but I dreaded looking back at the photos of how awful I’d look.
“I referred to my tummy as my ‘hazardous waste’.”
After being given a local anaesthetic, Oldfield says she watched as the fat was sucked out of her.
“The doctor pumped me full of water to separate the fat from the skin and muscle, then slowly withdrew my excess fat. I heard a sucking noise and then it was ‘goodbye Mars bars, goodbye chardonnay’.”
She says she was able to talk throughout the procedure that cost $10,000 and which David fully supported.
“He was fine — he’s never surprised by anything I do. He did ask what I was going to do with all the fat and I did mention that you can make soap with it.”
Now that she’s working as a sales director for a software company, Oldfield says the fat shouldn’t return to her waist and back.
“I’d always been a thin person but after having the boys I’d put on nine kilos.
“Obviously this isn’t going to make me look like a 20-year-old but I didn’t want to look like one of those housewives who wear their husband’s shirts over their jeans to hide their tummy. I wanted to feel confident again.
“I’m actually saving money because I’ll be able to wear all my old clothes again.
“I can’t wait to get back into my size-11 jeans.”
