Transurban’s pitch to widen the M7 ahead of airport completion

Toll road operators Transurban have a proposal before the state government they say will improve the commutes - and the lives - of Western Sydney families.

One of Sydney’s busiest roads is about to get even more hectic – with a new airport and adjoining motorway set to make the M7 one of the city’s most important thoroughfares.

It’s why toll road operators Transurban say widening the road is critical, in a proposal currently in the hands of the NSW Government.

Transurban say a breakdown of their Mobility Trends data reveals people expect their daily use of private car transport to be 13 per cent higher than before the pandemic.

It’s another reason why their submission to the NSW Government to widen sections of the M7, while also building an interchange connecting the M7-M12 interchange, should go ahead, according to Transurban’s group executive for NSW Michele Huey.

“The M7 is already one of Transurban’s busiest roads, and with Western Sydney Airport set to open in 2026, the M7 will be even more critical in keeping business and families across the region moving,” Ms Huey said.

“Widening the M7 would ensure it continues to move people and goods rapidly over long distances and connect to other parts of our network.”

The proposal to widen the motorway remains in front of the NSW Government for assessment.

Sydney train delays, petrol prices: why getting back to work is so hard

Western Sydney has worst access to public transport, prompting $20b spending call

Cain Slater, a father of two and Western Sydney worker, said his home life had improved since the WestConnex M8 opened – cutting his commute and allowing him to spend more time at home.

“I don’t think people realise how much of a difference a long commute makes to your life until you start thinking about it. Before Transurban’s M8 opened … there were so many times I got home, and the kids had already gone to bed – and you don’t get those times back,” he said.

“It plays on your mind. My kids are young, they sleep a lot, and if I’m not there, the boys go to Mum always – it has an effect. It makes you think about the stress it adds to your partner. I’ve left the house before they’re awake, and come home when they’re asleep.”
