Traffic chaos eases as M7 reopens following ethanol truck crash in Sydney’s southwest

Northbound traffic on the M7 in Sydney’s southwest is moving again after a major crash involving two trucks

All northbound lanes on the M7 motorway at Prestons have now reopened after a serious crash involving two trucks, including one transporting ethanol, caused major delays in Sydney’s southwest on Friday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 7.00am after a collision occurred just past Kurrajong Rd.

One of the vehicles jackknifed, spilling debris and causing the closure of all northbound lanes for several hours.

NSW Fire and Rescue acting superintendent Matt Sigmund confirmed that one of the trucks was carrying ethanol, a flammable liquid, which prompted a significant emergency response.

“Our firefighters continue to work to maintain safety at the scene and clear the roadway of debris and other hazards,” he said.

The incident brought traffic to a standstill, with congestion stretching back to Hoxton Park Reserve.

Crews began clearing the site shortly after 7.00am, removing one truck while heavy tow vehicles worked to remove the second.

While the lanes have now reopened, authorities are advising motorists to expect ongoing delays as residual congestion eases.

Drivers heading north from the Hume Motorway were earlier urged to divert via Camden Valley Way and Cowpasture Rd.

Those traveling westbound on the M5 were advised to exit at Casula and rejoin the M7 at Cecil Hills via the Hume Highway and Elizabeth Drive.

There have been no reports of serious injuries from the crash, but emergency services remained on site throughout the morning to ensure the area was safe and traffic flow could resume.
