The fire has since been extinguished and there are no injuries, but all westbound lanes between General Holmes Drive and the King Georges Road are closed.
Heavy tow trucks are on the scene.
The blaze was put out by 9am but with extensive damage to the truck a complex salvage operation is underway, said the Transport Management Centre. The fire has also caused damage to the road surface.
“The tyres have melted on the truck and that has damaged the road,” TMC spokesperson Kirsten Forbes.
