Drive-by shooting in Guildford

A family settling in to the first day at a new home in western Sydney have described their shock after a neighbour’s car was peppered with bullets.

The mother of the family, who declined to be identified, had moved into the home from just a few streets away. In a twist of fate, they were neighbours to Toufik and Salim Hamze - the father and son gunned down outside their home in 2021 as part of the underworld war between the Alameddine and Hamzy crime families.

Then, about 4.15am on Tuesday, police were called to Henry St, Granville after reports multiple shots were fired into a white Mercedes Benz.

“I moved just a couple of streets down and I did not expect this as my first day here, I’ve got children, it’s not safe for my children to play in the front yard anymore,” the woman said.

“Shooting after shooting non-stop.

“You’re too scared to go to a park, or the shops, or go for a walk. You don’t know what’s going to happen, you will probably get shot by accident or mistaken identity”.

Toufik and Salim Hamze were gunned down while they sat in their ute.

Their decision to move had been motivated by a desire to distance themselves from the growing “crime world” in Guildford, but today it followed them.

“This is really bad, this has to stop,” she said.

It comes as a teenager, believed to be the owner of a Mercedes Benz that was shot at on Tuesday, was taken into custody as police investigations continue

Three men were inside the car at the time and have escaped injury. It is believed the car’s owner, 19, who was taken into custody about 8.15am, was in the passenger seat.

A section of the street was cordoned off surrounding the white Mercedes with nearby residents allowed to move in and out of the crime scene under supervision.

Scared neighbours were woken by gunshots in the morning, with one resident saying police cars are seen in the street “once or twice a week”.

“There is always something happening,” the neighbour.

The neighbour said times have changed in Guilford and the shooting was the latest incident that has left locals feeling it’s “not safe to be outside by yourself to be honest, seeing what’s just happened now”.

A burnt-out vehicle was later found on Eureka Cres in Sadleir on Tuesday morning.

Police said there is no suggestion that it is linked to the shooting at this stage.

A crime scene has been established and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward and contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
