A brother and sister are alleged to have taken the phrase “birthday bash” a little too literally at a party in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, ending up in a wild brawl in which a police officer’s nose was broken, a court heard on Sunday.
Hayley Desnica was celebrating her 20th birthday with her brother Justyn at the Coogee Bay Hotel but their partying ended when the pair and friend Bryce Lockett were arrested.
Staff from the hotel called police about 9pm on Saturday when trouble broke out between several drinkers.
Things are alleged to have spiralled out of control after one patron gave Ms Desnica, who was visiting from Queensland, a hard time and the dispute then spilt out into the street.

A plainclothes officer had his nose broken and suffered a possible fractured jaw when he went to stop a fight between two people outside the pub, the court heard.
Ms Desnica was arrested and taken to Maroubra police station, where she was charged with affray.
Her brother Justyn, 30, from Hillsdale, was also arrested and charged with affray, assaulting police and possession of cocaine.
Lockett suffered a broken collar bone in the incident and was taken to nearby Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick. He was charged with affray when he was released.
The brother and sister both appeared in Parramatta Local Court on Sunday, where they were granted bail.
Mr Desnica must report to Maroubra Police Station three days a week, must not drink alcohol, must not return to the Coogee Bay Hotel and must submit a $1000 surety.
The magistrate said it would be “punishment enough not to go to the Coogee Bay Hotel,’’ to which Mr Desnica replied “ I don’t want to go back”.
Lockett, who suffered a broken collarbone and appeared with his arm in a sling, was also granted bail on the condition he lodge a $1000 surety.
All three were ordered to reappear on September 5.
