Outgoing prime minister Scott Morrison said the past four years had been very “difficult”, as he choked back tears during a service at his church the day after he lost the election.
“Jenny and I are very grateful to our church family here,” he said to the congregation of Horizon Church in Sutherland on Sunday.
“You have given us a great foundation on which we can walk, on what has been a very difficult walk over the past four years, I got to tell you.”
He said he was called to the top job and was happy that his last public address before he was replaced was to his own church.
“I’m very pleased the last thing I say as a prime minister is here. It would be good to get that in too,” he said.
“God calls us, whether you are a prime minister, or a pastor, or running a business, teaching in schools, working in the police force,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter, we are each called to trust and obey.”
He read a psalm from Micah: “As in the day when you went out from the land of Egypt, I will show you miracles,” he said.
Another psalm he read said: “I will be on the watch for the Lord, I will wait for the God of my salvation.
“My God will hear me, do not rejoice over me enemy of mine, though I fall I will rise.”
Then he asked God to bless his church community, and said “may God bless Australia”
Parishioner Niki Ioakim said Mr Morrison was visibly emotional for the duration of the church service.
“He read a psalm from the Bible and he just started to cry,” she said.
“It is just so sad.
“I can’t believe how people are so stupid,” she said of Saturday night’s election result.
She said wife Jenny was by his side, but his two daughters were not at the service.
“You could just tell from his body language, he just looked really down.”
“I was standing up here (behind him) and just felt really bad for him … I feel sad for Australia and what has happened.”
Mr Morrison just left at 11.20am from the church appearing upbeat, waving briefly to waiting media.
