The 40-year-old man who committed the deadliest attack in Sydney since the Lindt Cafe terror attack as he fatally stabbed six people at a shopping centre is “known to law enforcement”.

Dressed in a Kangaroos rugby league jersey and matching shorts, the 40-year-old man was shot dead by police after fatally stabbing six people on a rampage through Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday afternoon.

His victims were five women and one man. His killing spree came to an end on level five of the shopping centre when he was shot dead by a senior police officer as he advanced on her, refusing to drop his 30cm knife.

It’s understood he may have been suffering mental issues, and was a rough sleeper.

Police have all but ruled out his killing spree being related to terror attack, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said on Saturday night.

“If in fact it is the person who we believe it is, then we don’t have fears for that person holding an ideation,” she said.

“In other words it is not a terrorism incident.”

STABBING AT RANDOM

He first sparked alarm inside the Myer store where he is understood to have attacked two people, sending hundreds of shoppers screaming into the foyer and out into the streets.

His demeanour took several of his victims by surprise. In several videos he appears to be walking around the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre, calmly brandishing a 30cm kitchen knife.

In another video, he stands still, unfazed as a brave shopper attempts to stop him on the escalators with a bollard.

By that time, more vision had already captured him jogging around a corner, past a Boost Juice stand as he was again confronted by a member of the public.

Moving more determinedly this time, their heroic attempts failed and he continued to stab at random, before advancing onto more victims.

Entering the centre at 3pm, he left for a short time and then returned at 3.20pm to begin his rampage

One of his victims is a nine-month-old baby who was still fighting for life after being stabbed multiple times.

Armed with a large knife, the man made his way through multiple levels of the shopping centre before the senior police officer fired her weapon and ended the rampage.

Vision and witness reports revealed the man made his way through every level of the centre, despite frantic attempts to stop him as shoppers threw furniture from the floors above.

Tearful witnesses recalled seeing him make his way through Myer, outside Kmart and Zara, stabbing at people outside Peter Alexander and Boost Juice, before being shot on the top level.

The NSW Police, the Australian Federal Police and the director general of ASIO were all undergoing briefings on the case on Saturday night.

His motivation was among many things still being looked into as police interview his family.
