Four single-sex state high schools are to join a handful of Sydney schools that have already gone coeducational in line with parents’ preferences.
It was revealed on Tuesday that James Cook Boys Technology High School and Moorefield Girls High School will merge, and Asquith Boys High School and Asquith Girls High School will also go co-ed.
In March Education Minister Prue Car announced that Liverpool Boys High School and Liverpool Girls High School would merge and in 2023 the controversial decision was made to merge Randwick Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools for 2025.
A rezoning of 20 state schools was announced in February 2024 following Minns Government polling of more than 300 parents about their preference for single sex or mixed campuses, and consulted staff and students from 120 schools.
A number of independent and Catholic schools have already made the switch, notably Cranbrook School and Newington College - which ruffled the feathers of parents and alumni.
