Police are investigating whether a man found dead in a campervan at a rest stop in the New England may have been the victim of a robbery.
Detectives made the grim discovery in a campervan on the side of the road at a rest area near Goonoo Goonoo station, on the New England Highway, near Tamworth, around 11.45am on Monday.
The body, which has yet to be identified, was found by police after a concern for welfare call to authorities.
The campervan was found not far from Goonoo Goonoo Station, a working cattle station which has been refurbished with luxury accommodation, about 25 kilometres outside Tamworth.
Oxley Police District crime manager Jason Darcy said it was “too early” to speculate on whether the death was suspicious or an accident.
Detectives did, however, notice drawers within the campervan were open and a generator was missing.
Police have now confirmed they are investigating several possibilities, including that the man may have died after being robbed.
Police are appealing to the community for help, asking for dashcam footage or CCTV of the campervan.
“We’re looking for information concerning if anyone had been around that rest area over the last few days and seen the campervan, to contact police or Crime Stoppers,” Insp Darcy said.
