Sydney’s Taiwanese community is in shock after two close friends who were working for Uber Eats on a scooter were killed when an allegedly distracted bus driver smashed into them.
Kuan Wei “Bill” Chen, 28, and his pillion passenger, Su Po Hsu, 32, died after bus driver Luis Rojas, 49, allegedly rear-ended their scooter and pushed them into an oncoming 4WD in Kingsgrove on Monday night.
Sydney man Ming-Ju Ou said the pair had been working for Uber Eats before their sudden deaths.
“I’m shocked, I can’t believe what’s happened,” he said.
“This is really bad, the two of them are really (dead).”
Another man, who knew both Chen and Hsu, said his friends launched a desperate search for them and looked “all night”, repeatedly ringing their phones and messaging them before they learnt of their deaths.
“I just can’t believe it, we searched all night until we got the news from his roommate,” he said.
“Su Po had got to Australia last year. I was roommates with Bill in 2013. We worked together … in Melbourne.
“I got news from a Facebook group that two Taiwanese people had been killed, the names on the post looked familiar.”
Another woman living in Taiwan said friends back home in Asia had been worried about the pair before finding out the awful news.
“We are all worried about Su Po Hsu and Kuan Wei Chen,” she said.
“(Su Po) is very generous, good and honest. He helps everyone, even if he is not close with someone he will still help.
“And his father has health problems, so he needs to earn more money to take care of his father.
“His roommate already saw the body, it’s Su Po.
Another friend wrote about Su Po on Facebook: “You have been absent from the meal that was already planned, brother.”
Hairdresser Tina Chiu, 34, said she struck up a friend Kuan-Wei Chen after cutting his hair three years ago in Sydney.
“He always used to drive a car,” she said.
“He’s very good person, he’s like very gentle, and always talked very politely.
“It’s unbelievable what happened I still feel it’s not true.”
