Sydneysiders exploring their city in a new way this Christmas

Not going away this Christmas? Find out how you can win the ultimate Sydney escape.

Sydney by boat

While scores of Sydneysiders plan their holidays out of town — many are also choosing to explore in their own city by booking unique local experiences over the Christmas break.

Data from travel website Wotif found that in the absence of international travellers and city workers, the CBD was home to great value deals making it the perfect time for a staycation.

Among the top experiences are luxury private picnics at some of Sydney’s most popular spots around the harbour.

Kay’s Picnics and Events owner Kiana Gonzales said her clients were increasingly requesting gourmet picnics in popular spots like Lavender Bay, Observatory Hill, Cremorne Point Reserve and Centennial Parklands.

“Compared to last year there has been a huge increase in people wanting to picnic around Sydney. All the picnic businesses I know are pretty much booked out,” she said.

“It’s a great way to see the city and lots of people want me to set a picnic up for them in the sunshine, with a nice view of the harbour. We usually provide a grazing table, some flowers and lanterns and candles.”

Ms Gonzales has been pairing her picnic packages with a water bike business in Lavender Bay so her clients can enjoy the city’s serene views and then paddle out to enjoy the water.

My Sydney Boat owner Mark Dalgleish said locals were also hunting out the city’s hidden spots by boat to satisfy their taste for adventure.

“Australians are inquisitive travellers. We try to hunt down the hidden gems when we are overseas and now we are doing that here in Sydney. People are not being able to travel abroad so they are looking for more unique experiences locally and are prepared to pay a bit more,” he said.

“We have had people come on the boat and we take them to hidden spots that can only be accessed by water and it’s been a huge hit.”

Kristy Wordsworth and Peter Talaz were among the many Sydneysiders exploring the city’s secluded spots on Mr Dalgleish’s boat.

“We felt like we were really far away. Everyone‘s itching to get that travel experience and we are also so limited so having this chance to be so removed from the grind has been amazing,” Mr Talaz said.
