Sydneysiders can expect a rainy afternoon commute with a potential thunderstorm, but will get a taste of summer tomorrow with a top of 30 degrees.

Analysis: Australia’s upcoming weather forecast

Pack an umbrella – while it will be a muggy day there is rain on the cards on Thursday afternoon ahead of a warm, sunny Friday to give us a welcome taste of summer.

It will be partly cloudy in Sydney on Thursday with a top of 29 degrees as the Bureau of Meteorology predicts “a chance” of thunderstorms and rain to arrive later in the day.

According to Weatherzone, initially light winds will increase to about 25km/h in the middle of the day before settling down for the rest of the day.

In Coffs Harbour and Tamworth there will be a top of 33 degrees and 37 degrees respectively with “severe storms” possible.

The highest temperature expected in NSW today is at Mulurulu, closer to Adelaide than Sydney, slated for a top of 41.4 degrees around 2.30pm.

The temperature will peak around 11am with heavier showers expected to begin around 5pm, while Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe said “severe” thunderstorms would hit northern NSW.

“As we move into this afternoon, some of these showers and thunderstorms will become severe thunderstorms in north-east NSW, so north of Sydney and up to the Queensland border we could see a few storms today with damaging gusts the main concern with those storms.”

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for the NSW-QLD border until Friday for a ‘low intensity’ heatwave.

Southwest parts of the state will experience a “mild” day.
