Traffic remains slow on the Eastern Distributor with maintenance crews working to repair a wall after a truck caught fire this morning.
The paneling on a wall was damaged after the incident occured at about 7.30am.
All lanes are now open except for the far left lane for northbound traffic.
A Traffic Management Spokesman said the Eastern Distributor maintenance crew was using a cherry picker to investigate the extent of the damage.
This morning traffic was brought to standstill with vehicles backed up more than 10kms after a truck caught fire.
The Transport Management Centre said traffic is heavy in both directions with emergency services attending the scene.
“The Eastern Distributor is closed southbound at Moore Park due to a truck fire approaching Dacey Avenue,” it said.
“Southbound traffic is being diverted off the Eastern Distributor at the Bondi/Randwick exit.
“One of three northbound lanes is also closed for emergency services.”
Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze just after 8am and the truck has been towed away.
Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Scott Dodson said there are still road closures.
“There has been some damage to the panels of the tunnel and it is still shut,” he said.
Road closures have caused traffic to bank up for kilometres on the M1.
Commuters travelling south are at a standstill for more than 5km but congestion reaches as far back as 10km.
For those heading north, heavy traffic is queued for 5km.
