“We feel heartfelt sorrow for the family of Katrina Dawson.
“We’d like to thank not only our friends and loved ones for their support, but the people of Sydney, Australia and those around the world for reaching out with their thoughts and prayers.
“Our deepest gratitude to the NSW Police, armed forces and paramedics for their tireless efforts.
“We ask that the media respects our privacy in this difficult time.
“Let us all pray for peace on earth.”
Fellow worker Bruno Filletti posted a tribute to Facebook and telling how he tried to enter the café to start work at 10am but the door had been locked.
He said his manager Mr Johnson had “sacrificed himself” to save others.
“The only word that can be used to describe Tori. He died trying to save another’s life. He sacrificed himself to save everyone. You may be gone but never forgotten my friend. Rest In Peace,” he posted on Facebook.
Tori Johnson’s former boss has paid an emotional tribute to the hero of the Martin Place siege.
Peter Manettas, manager of Nick’s Seafood where the 34-year-old worked for six years, described him as a selfless and talented man who was deeply proud of his family and friends.
“He was an amazing person, a selfless person, a person who always put other people before himself,” Mr Manettas told The Daily Telegraph.
“We’re deeply saddened by what’s happened, it’s still sinking in.”
Tori Johnson reportedly died during a heroic final standoff with the gunman, attempting to wrestle the shotgun from his hands.
“He was a leader in everything he did. In his work career he was never someone to take a backward step,” said Mr Manettas.
“It’s very rare to find someone as dedicated and passionate as Tori ... it’s a huge loss.
“Our best wishes are with his family. Family was everything to him and not a single day would go by when he wouldn’t talk about them. He was very proud.”
Johnson also leaves behind a partner who works in hospitality in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
He was working as the manager of the Lindt Cafe’s flagship Australian store at the time of his tragic death.
He previously studied in the United States and earned a Hospitality Business Management degree from Washington State University in 2003.
He managed Adria Rybar & Grill, part of the Nick’s Seafood Group, for six years between 2006 and 2012.
