They are some of the grandest mansions and attention-grabbing buildings in Sydney, with 25 rooms plus, servants’ quarters, sprawling pools and spectacular harbour views.
But while the homes may be impressive, many of these properties have owners who are equally as interesting.
The Sunday Telegraph has taken a look at 20 of Sydney’s most eye-catching mega mansions and the billionaires, millionaires, politicians, actors and average Joes who call these places home.
NICK PASPALEY JR
Head of family company Paspaley, which pioneered the Australian South Sea pearl industry
Mansion: Ramona, Elizabeth Bay
Located on the same street as Lindsay Fox’s mansion Boomerang, Ramona is a late Victorian mansion famous for its ornate leadlight windows, cedar joinery and spectacular harbour views.

Former prime minister and former Greater Sydney Commission chief
Mansion: Wolseley Rd, Point Piper
The Mediterranean style property is set on 1940sq m with a swimming pool, boat shed and private jetty.

You either love or loathe this monument to fashion brand Versace, completed with branded bath and marble busts of Roman emperors and figures from Greek mythology.

Mansion: Kaylana, Kenthurst
Set on 2.2ha with five bedrooms, pool with spa and swim-up bar, wine cellar and dedicated poker room.

Billionaire founder of Meriton apartments
Mansion: Wentworth Rd, Vaucluse
Mr Triguboff’s residence was originally two properties that he has melded into his private retreat. It now has its own putting green, three pools and a harbourside jetty.

MIKE CANNON-BROOKES
Mansion: Fairwater, Double Bay
This 1.2ha property was last traded in 1901 before Cannon-Brookes splashed on the most expensive home in the country in 2018. It has stables, a library and staff quarters over two levels.

Atlassian co-founder
Mansion: Elaine Estate, Double Bay
Prior to the 2017 purchase the Fairfax family had owned the Victorian mansion for 126 years. Mr Farquhar lives next door to fellow Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes.

Former state Labor politician convicted of misconduct in public office, spending three years in prison
Mansion: Passy Ave, Hunters Hill
The sandstone five-bedroom mansion was built in 1850 as the residence for the French consul. It is considered one of the best homes in the upper class suburb.

Son of retirement home and aged care mogul Doug Moran
Mansion: Swifts, Darling Point
It may be next to an ugly apartment block but this Gothic Revival castle is still one of the grandest homes in Sydney, with 56 rooms and plans for a new tennis court.

DR CHAU CHAK WING
Billionaire property developer who spends much of his time in China. He has a UTS building named after him after donating $25m to the university where his son studied architecture
Mansion: La Mer, Vaucluse
It is the former property of James Packer who reportedly described it as like living in a shopping centre.

STEVE SMITH
Australian cricket captain
Mansion: Kings Rd, Vaucluse
The four bedroom, six bathroom property was purchased in recent months. It has an in-ground pool, gym, steam room, four-car garage and 400-bottle wine cellar.

Trucking magnate
Mansion: Boomerang, Elizabeth Bay
This Spanish-inspired mansion has 25 main rooms, six bathrooms, four kitchens and four main bedrooms as well as extensive gardens and a pool next to Sydney Harbour.

Jackie O purchased this four-bedroom property in June. It has a double garage, 6m ceilings, swimming pool, and large glass walls looking over Cooper Park.

This heritage-listed property is where Mr Hemmes grew up and it has been in his family since the 1970s. It was renovated in 2011, to include an iconic marble kitchen, and is located in the exclusive Hermit Bay.
