An IT specialist accused of plying his girlfriend with a common date-rape drug then videoing himself sexually abusing her while she was unconscious has been returned to the community on bail.

The Sydney man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is alleged to have repeatedly dosed his now ex-partner with excessive amounts of GHB, commonly known as ‘the date rape drug’, which has a similar affect on the body as valium and caused the woman to pass out for up to nine hours at a time.

It is alleged the man then filmed himself raping her as she lay unconscious or semiconscious in bed, with the videos later uploaded to a folder on his computer.

The Sydney man is not accused of allowing others to assault his partner and is only charged with offences relating to his own alleged conduct towards her.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the man was arrested on December 13 and charged with eight counts of rape and six counts of administering an intoxicating substance after his now ex-partner provided police with a statement, along with a USB stick containing 12 videos she was able to download from the computer.

However, in a shock twist, the man allegedly claimed during his police interview that all of the acts – from the GHB dosing to the unconscious sex – had been done with his partner’s full knowledge and consent.

He told detectives he had text messages between the pair to back up the claims, the court heard.

According to police documents tendered to the court, the woman admitted to police when giving her statement that she had become addicted to GHB after using it regularly to assist with anxiety, and that her partner would sometimes give the dose to her in a syringe.

However, she claimed he began giving her excessive amounts without her knowledge – more than double what she would normally have – resulting in her lapsing into unconsciousness.

She told police she would wake up hours later, naked and lying in her boyfriend’s bed, with no recollection of what had happened, although on one occasion, she discovered she was bleeding from the vagina and anus.

When she questioned the man about the injuries, he allegedly admitted to having sex with her while she was passed out.

She told police she wanted to find out how many times this had occurred, so she told her partner she found the incident “exciting”.

It is alleged the man then gave her access to a Google Drive folder titled “Insanely Sexy”, which allegedly contained approximately 50 videos of him engaging in sex with her while she was semi or unconscious.

The court heard the pair’s Two-and-a-half-year relationship ended in mid-2024, and she attended a rehab centre for treatment for GHB addiction.

She reported the alleged sexual abuse to police in October and provided the USB stick containing the videos in November.

The Telegraph has chosen not to print details of what was contained in the videos due to the graphic nature of the material.

The court heard the man, who is aged in his 30s and works as an IT specialist in the finance and lending industry, was granted bail by a NSW Local Court magistrate the day after his arrest, prompting prosecutors to apply to the Supreme Court for an urgent detention order.

The case was heard on December 19, with Justice Demond Fagan agreeing to grant the man strict conditional bail provided he comply with the terms of an apprehended domestic violence order that bans him from having any contact with his ex-partner.

As part of his bail, the man must also report to police daily, live with his mother and abide by a night-time curfew.

The case will return to court in February.
