A multi-vehicle crash in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel caused six-kilometre southbound traffic delays this morning, stretching motorists back to the Lane Cove tunnel.

Four cars including a van and a Saab station wagon collided inside the tunnel at North Sydney just before 7am on Thursday.

The crash blocked both lanes of the Harbour Tunnel southbound for almost 40 minutes before the site was cleared and the tunnel reopened at 7.30am.

A Transport Management Centre spokesman said traffic was “significant” and stretched back along the Warringah Freeway and Gore Hill Freeway to the Lane Cove tunnel.

Traffic along Military Rd was also heavy as motorists were diverted onto the Harbour Bridge for much of the morning peak.

Live Traffic Sydney reported delays through Mosman, Milsons Pt and Neutral Bay, with slow conditions in Artarmon and Naremburn.
