Sydney CTP insurance claim hot spot suburbs revealed

MINOR claims against compulsory third party insurance have quadrupled in the past five years in some Sydney suburbs, which the NSW government says is evidence of the need for its proposed reforms to the “green slips” system.

Figures provided by Better Regulation Minister Victor Dominello reveal in Liverpool, Prestons and Casula, minor severity claims rose from 94 in 2008 to 318 in 2014, in Bankstown from 42 to 163, in Cabramatta from 16 to 48, Bossley Park 55 to 151, Fairfield 42 to 198, Cabramatta 48 to 168 and Guildford from 30 to 131.

The numbers refer to minor claims including whiplash, fractured thumbs and soft tissue injuries to the chest. Last month The Daily Telegraph revealed a rise in claims — including frauds — was increasing the cost of green slips to customers by an average $40 last year.

Mr Dominello wants to introduce set payments for minor injuries under a no-fault “defined benefits scheme” to save insurance costs, with only the most serious cases to be fought out in the courts if needed.

“The significant rise in CTP claims in certain regions is concerning,” he said.

Mr Dominello is set to host a CTP fraud taskforce summit today.
