Mejid Hamzy hit: Fears of new all-out Sydney gang war

A spate of drive-by shootings police suspect began on Christmas Day and ran late into Tuesday night has terrorised families in South Granville and Guildford.

The people targeted in the gangland shootings are understood to have loose associations with connections of the notorious Alameddine and Hamzy crime families however are not involved in the well-publicised feud between the two families or any criminal activity.

More than a dozen bullets were fired into a family home at Aubrey St, South Granville which contained two men and two children, just after 7.30pm Tuesday.

Police said it was a miracle nobody was hit and witnesses told them a blue Audi sedan was seen leaving the scene.

That vehicle was found burnt out on nearby John St, where more witnesses said men had fled that scene in a silver Mitsubishi Pajero.

Shortly after police were called to Woodville Rd, also in South Granville, where the Pajero had collided with a white 4WD. They later located the Pajero in Merrylands and arrested the alleged 27-year-old driver.

Then, just before 10pm, another home was shot up on Kirk Ave in Guildford, where a man and woman and three children were home.

Police said a white Audi was seen fleeing the Kirk Ave shooting, which was later found burnt out on Miowera Rd, Chester Hill.

Detectives believe the two shootings on Tuesday are also linked to a third shooting which took place on Kirk Ave on Christmas Day. Police were called there on December 25 and found spent cartridges in the street, however no proof anything had actually been shot.

Detectives are investigating whether, rather than tit-for-tat shootings, the three attacks could each be one gang shooting at another.

“We can’t say that it was retaliation … we believe they are all linked,” Detective Acting Superintendent Simon Glasser, of Cumberland police, said.

“The occupants of the home are known to other people that may be committing the offences.

“Both properties had families inside involving some younger children so it is very concerning that children have been subjected to offences involving firearms.”

“It’s obviously a concern to us, we’re mounting an operation today with police from Cumberland, Strike Force Raptor and South West Metropolitan Group.”
