Sydney Camel Racing Carnival brings sport from outback to Bankstown

HOW fast a one-humped dromedary camel can sprint depends on whether it feels like running.

Yesterday kicked off the first of the three-day Sydney Camel Racing Carnival, bringing the sport from the outback to Bankstown Paceway.

The fourth annual event brought together a competitive group of cameleers to test who had the fastest ride — or at least the best behaved. Director of Bankstown Paceway, Megan Lavender, said camels were an unpredictable bunch.

“We had one that was winning and and when it was just about to cross the line, it sat down,” she said.

They are waiting for confirmation, but may have a new track record with a 400m sprint completed in 32 seconds.
