A Sydney bakery has posted images of custom-made cakes depicting an infamous Hamas terrorist and a four-year-old boy in a similar outfit, sparking outrage.
The bakery, Oven Bakery by Fu Fu, posted images of the child and the cakes, decked out in the flag of Palestine and the head of the terrorist, on its Instagram account on Tuesday, but later pulled the account after a barrage of online criticism.
The image on the cake and multiple cupcakes featured the widely circulated online image of Hamas spokesman Abu Ubaida, striking a pose with his finger in the air.
The young child, dressed up in an army camouflage jacket and donning the same red scarf as Ubaida, is also featured holding his finger up like the masked terrorist.
The bakery delivers all around Sydney and says it makes custom cakes to order.
It says it was recently invited to cater sweet treats for the annual iftar Muslim community dinner in Sydney.
Initially, some Instagram users praised the dressed up child, saying the boy “was a champion” and “What a cutie masallah” with love hearts, before others condemned it and the bakery pulled the plug.
Premier Chris Minns said the images were “horrifying”.
“Hamas is an evil terrorist organisation,” he said.
“Kids party’s should be innocent and fun, not hateful.”
NSW Opposition leader Mark Speakman said the cakes were “simply shocking” and called on the bakery to give a “public apology”.
“It serves as an alarming reminder of the threat to our social cohesion,” Mr Speakman said.
“Instead of baked goods celebrating terrorists, we should be celebrating people in our community who are promoting a more cohesive society.”
Jewish groups condemned the bakery’s actions as a promotion of terrorism to young children.
“Dressing a child up as a terrorist, including with what appears to be a Hamas headband is reprehensible and a form of child abuse,” Australian Jewish Group chief executive Robert Gregory said.
“Islamic extremism and radicalisation of youth is not just a problem for the Jewish community. It’s a threat to all Australians.
“Australia has seen several recent incidents of Muslim youth allegedly stabbing or plotting to attack other Australians.
“Indoctrination starts at a young age and is similar to what is seen across the Middle East.”
Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin said boys should celebrating with Batman or Real Madrid themes.
“It takes a rare kind of psychosis to want to teach infant children that Hamas terrorists are to be admired and emulated,” he said.
“If this is what is happening in some Sydney homes, we should prepare for a generation of violent extremists.
“The authorities should be aware of this incident.”
The bakery has been contacted for comment.
