Sydney Airport stops after fire alarm sees staff evacuated

Flights have been delayed and staff were evacuated.

Power outage causes delays at Sydney Airport

Sydney Airport travellers had flights delayed on Sunday evening after staff were evacuated because of a malfunctioning fire alarm.

The busy airport ground to a halt about from 6:30pm after an “airconditioning unit triggered a fire alarm in the building”, according to AirServices Australia.

A spokesperson said staff inside the Airport’s terminal control unit were evacuated by 6:56pm but returned to work after 20 minutes “when it was established safe to do so”.

No other buildings including the traffic control tower were evacuated but the disruption led to a ground stop being put in place, which prevented aircraft flying into Sydney from landing for 20 minutes.
Both Sydney’s domestic and international airports were affected by the stoppage.

It’s understood flights taking off from the airport were also affected, with an airport source saying “there will be delays”.

Passengers took to social media to share their frustration at the stoppage, with some claiming flights from interstate were being cancelled altogether.

“Stuck in Perth, sitting on the tarmac Sydney airport not accepting any incoming flights and will miss the curfew,” one passenger wrote.

“Flights out of (Brisbane) to (Sydney) being cancelled as a result,” another wrote.

Flights from Brisbane and Melbourne to Sydney were cancelled, while more than a dozen flights into the harbour city will arrive later than expected.
