SWIMMERS were left with chemical burns to their eyes and throats after Hurstville Aquatic Centre staff last night botched an attempt to chlorinate the water.
A witness told The Saturday Telegraph parents and children fled when the fire alarm was pulled, just after 8.30pm.
A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said initial investigations suggested toxic fumes were caused by staff accidentally mixing acid and chlorine together.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said swimmers suffered minor chemical burns, which irritated their eyes and throats.
About a dozen people, including children, were treated by paramedics but no one was taken to hospital.
A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said initial investigations suggested the fumes were caused by staff mixing pool chemicals.
“We have had some acid and chlorine have been mixed together in the pool complex,” he said.
“I think it was done by staff accidentally mixing it together.”
