The headmaster of an elite Sydney boarding school has spoken out after accusations senior students tortured and killed a goanna on a school cadet camp.

Students from the prestigious school landed themselves in hot water after claims multiple boys tortured and killed the animal.

The incident took place on March 29 in the Singleton area, and was kept under wraps for weeks until the King’s School was approached by 2GB’s Ben Fordham who received an anonymous tip off on the matter.

After being asked for a comment, the $40,000-a-year school confirmed the information, and then released a statement condemning the acts of its pupils at the end-of-term camp.

“We can confirm that a goanna was killed by senior students,” the statement read.

“Staff from The King’s School reported the matter from police and to Defence.”

“The King’s School does not condone the behaviour of these students it is inconsistent with the values and expectations of behaviour at King’s.”

On Monday, King’s headmaster Tony George defended the school’s decision to report the incident to police.

“In any matter that is potentially unlawful or criminal in nature we would immediately refer that to the relevant authorities,” Mr George told Ben Fordham on 2GB radio.

Despite police investigating the incident, Mr George said it was possible the students weren’t responsible for the goanna’s death.

“A goanna is dead that is a certainty,” he said when questioned by Fordham.

“The case as to how and what was involved, we don’t know the details ... there is a realm of possibility this is the case (that students are innocent) but what we have is that the allegations are sufficient.

“These things are not straight forward and simple. They are quite complex and when you have some adolescent boys in the heat of the moment of trying to recollect and put that together and what could have been done differently is all hindsight.”

It is still unclear what, if any, disciplinary action may be taken by the school against the students involved.

Police from The Hills area command are investigating the incident.

As investigations continue, anyone with information is asked to call The Hills Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
