What to look for in a car insurance policy

WESTERN Sydney will be the first target of a new state government cost-of-living push, with motorists in three suburbs set to be issued green slip refunds of about $73 each from today.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal motorists in the west of the city have been selected as the first to receive the cash boost in a pilot project for the refunds, which are generated by the government’s green slip reforms last year.

The refunds will be made available to four million drivers across NSW in the coming months.

But from today 15,000 vehicle owners in Seven Hills, Kings Langley and Lalor Park will share more than $1 million in refunds delivered through Service NSW.

Cost of living, particularly in Western Sydney and the regions, will be a key election battleground over the next year and the Berejiklian government will work hard to get runs on the board to offset Labor’s claims the areas have been forgotten.

The green slip reforms, driven by Finance Minister Victor Dominello, have reduced CTP premiums by up to $172 a year for regular motorists. Taxi drivers are $3000 better off.

As well as reduced premiums, most motorists in the state are in line to receive refunds for insurance calculated on the cost of the old scheme.

“The new CTP scheme is delivering a big win for motorists through lower premiums, greater protections for those injured on the road and refunds on the premiums paid during 2017,” Mr Dominello said.

The green slip measures are just one of several reforms Premier Gladys Berejiklian has introduced to tackle cost-of-living issues, with even more expected in the lead up to the 2019 election.

Most so far have focused on motorists — free car registration for regular toll users, the FuelCheck app.

The government has also installed measures for cheaper hospital parking.

Vehicle owners can check about their availability for the refunds on the Service NSW website.

NSW was previously the most expensive state in which to get a green slip.
