John Laws, a towering presence in Australian broadcasting, is being laid to rest at a state funeral this afternoon, a final farewell to a man whose voice became part of the country’s cultural fabric.

Over a career spanning seven decades, Laws transformed talkback radio and forged a rare connection with millions of listeners.

His journey began in 1953 at Bendigo’s 3BO before he went on to become a fixture on Sydney’s 2UE and 2SM.

His unmistakeable baritone earned him the nickname “Golden Tonsils”, a title that stuck throughout a career few in the industry have matched.

The NSW Government has extended condolences to his loved ones, acknowledging the extraordinary contribution he made to public life, media and national conversation.
