NSW state election 2023: Coalition pledge millions for bush school science and technology classrooms

The Coalition are going hammer and tong on school infrastructure in their campaign for re-election, making a new $120 million pledge for bush classrooms.

Who won the day?

Brand new high-tech science labs and woodworking classrooms are in order for schools in the bush, to the tune of $120 million under a Coalition election pledge to boost regional education.

Schools in regional and remote areas will be able to apply for funding to have multimillion-dollar world-class “specialist” facilities built at their schools, including modernised woodworking and metalworking workshops, fitness centres, and ‘innovation and STEM’ laboratories.

The ‘Regional Schools Excellence Fund’ caters for large-scale infrastructure projects, following a previous $180 million funding announcement for small capital works and upgrades like shade sails and classroom refurbishments. Both schemes come under the purview of the $1.2 billion in total budgeted for school infrastructure projects.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the infrastructure investments would guarantee kids in the bush aren’t missing out on the hands-on learning opportunities afforded to students in the cities.

“We want every kid to have the opportunities to strive for excellence, no matter where they live or what their talents and interests might be,” he said.

“With this new fund, we’ll build on our vision to ensure access to better schools with the best teachers isn’t defined by where you call home.”

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said her government has “a proven track record” in making sure regional kids aren’t left behind.

“Living in Gunnedah and with children at our local public school, I know that we have fantastic schools in the bush,” she said.

“This fund will ensure our regional schools continue to offer the best possible learning spaces and facilities, matching the aspiration that regional families have for their children.
