A YOUNG bride-to-be watched in terror as two men wearing balaclavas gunned down her fiance, shooting him execution-style in a suburban street.
The victim, 29-year-old Mehmet Yilmaz, was visiting the home of Comancheros member Tayan Chandab on Friday night when he was killed in a hail of bullets as he returned to his car.
His assassins lay in wait while Mr Yilmaz left his fiancee in the car to go inside the house on Brisbane St, St Marys, in Sydney’s west, shooting him at least five times at close range with a semi-automatic handgun.
One of the attackers then got out of a car and shot the victim at point blank range while he lay in the gutter. The killers then drove off and were last seen driving towards the Great Western Highway.
Emergency services were called about 7.20pm but the victim died at the scene. Neighbours heard gunshots before his distraught fiancee, who was reportedly set to wed this month, began screaming and crying as he lay dying on the side of the road.
“She was just wailing and she kept saying ‘my baby, my baby’,” one neighbour, who did not want to named, said.
“She was just hysterical.”
Mr Chandab, who was himself targeted by masked gunmen on a nearby street in 2013 but survived, said he did not know why his “mate” was targeted.
“I wouldn’t have a clue. It’s part of life, you just move on,” he said. “I didn’t even know his fiancee was here until it happened.”
Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Grant Taylor said it was too early to say how and why the victim was murdered, but links to bikie gangs were a likely motive.
“We certainly know that we have a lot of avenues to explore and all those avenues lead us down the road of outlaw motorbike gang members,” Det Inspector Taylor said. “They certainly wanted to make sure this individual was deceased.”
Police said Mr Yilmaz was known to police but was not a member of a bikie gang, even though he was believed to be “closely aligned” with them. Det Insp Taylor said the victim’s fiancee was very lucky to be alive. “She was very, very lucky not to be killed herself,” he said.
“A number of projectiles entered the vehicle she was sitting in and by the grace of God they missed. She is very shaken up.”
