South Sydney Rabbitohs boss Blake Solly insists he had no idea of the shocking allegations of violence, substance abuse and gambling binges of fallen superstar Sam Burgess that have rocked the “pride of the league” in recent days.

Blake Solly is so highly regarded in sporting circles that he was spoken about as a potential replacement for Todd Greenberg when the NRL chief executive was sacked earlier this year.

He is now dealing with claims his club was involved in a cover-up relating to allegations against one of their biggest stars.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs boss insists he had no idea of the shocking allegations of violence, substance abuse and gambling binges of fallen superstar Sam Burgess that have rocked the “pride of the league” in recent days.

Solly finally broke his silence following a two-and-a-half hour grilling by the integrity unit late on Friday afternoon to get his version of events.

“Allegations that the club would cover up domestic violence made me feel sick, there is just no place in society for violence against women, no place at all,” Solly said.

He said he fully supported the NRL investigation.

“I was interviewed by the integrity unit on Friday, and both the club and I are totally supportive of the NRL investigation.

“The club has made a statement and it would be inappropriate for me to give a running commentary on the investigation. Clearly we take these allegations very seriously.

“The first time I heard about the allegations from the 6th and 7th of November 2018 was when contacted by The Australian on Thursday afternoon.

“I also endorse the comments of Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo yesterday that all parties involved deserve due process and natural justice. We will provide full co-operation with the NRL in their investigation.”

Burgess stood down as a Souths assistant coach on Friday after The Australian newspaper revealed allegations of wild benders and substance abuse. It is also alleged there was a cover-up of the incident by the club.

NSW Police have confirmed a strike force has been set up to investigate the allegations raised by Burgess’ ex-wife Phoebe on Wednesday. She presented a 50-page affidavit to Southern Highland Police. Burgess, through his lawyer, has strenuously denied all allegations and no charges have been laid. NSW Police said the lengthy and complicated probe would be conducted under Strike Force Irrabella. Burgess stepped down from his development coaching role with the club ahead of their elimination final against the Newcastle Knights on Sunday.
