A man who died in a horrific high-speed collision near a bushfire ravaged town in the state’s south leaves behind his partner and a young child.
Jay Taylor, 28, died when his 4WD smashed into a 14-tonne truck on the Princes Hwy, near Bumbo Rd, Bodalla, around 4pm on Tuesday.
NSW Police said they found Mr Taylor and the driver of the truck dead on arrival.
Mr Taylor’s best friend Josh Pakes, a NSW RFS firefighter at Culburra Beach, said he had been left “devastated” by the tragic passing of this mate.
“2020 possibly couldn’t have started any worse for me. I still can’t believe and don’t want to believe it,” Mr Pakes said.
“Jayden was the hardest working bloke I’d ever meet you where so keen on life fly high brother I’ll never forget our memories we shared.”
Another of Mr Taylor’s friends, Megan Whitely, said the world had “truly lost someone special”.
“You were one of the few people who connected genuinely with someone when you spoke to them. No bullshit, no pressure. People could just be themselves around you and I LOVED that. All I can think about is your laugh,” she said.
“Thank you for all the years you and Joseph (her partner) gallivanted around like damn fools pissing me off. I loved you both for it.
“Thank you for making every adventure hilarious.”
Glass and metal was scattered across the highway following yesterday’s crash, with the crumpled 4WD crushed on the side of the road.
The Roadmaster truck had its front cabin completely crushed in the crash and police closed off the highway as they assessed the scene.
Lisa Maree Blinman told The Daily Telegraph it was not a particularly dangerous stretch of road.
“It is smoky all the time (around here) but at that place there is only a slight bend (in the road),” she said.
“It looks like the truck has clipped the 4WD and it has rolled.”
The area has been ravaged by bushfires in recent weeks and locals said there had been some problems with visibility earlier on Thursday.
