Sleep all day, pub at night: Greyounds the best urban dogs

A dog that doesn’t bark much, is happy in an apartment and loves going to the pub? Sounds like the perfect inner-city pooch.

Greyhounds at the pub: Best dogs for city life

When Mya isn’t flat out asleep on the sofa she likes nothing more than hanging out at the local pub.

It certainly is a dog’s life for this greyhound.

Which suits owners Kat Mayhook and partner Tom Ellen — both busy advertising executives.

“We wanted to adopt a dog that would be good for our lifestyle,” Kat said. “We both work full time and live in an apartment which is perfect for Mya. It always surprise people as they know greyhounds as racers but they are actually the biggest couch potatoes.”

Indeed sometimes Kat takes her dog to the office for the day but Mya, now five years old, has been known to baulk at the 40 minute walk there and back.

What she can’t get enough of is cuddles.

“She’s like velcro,” said Kat. “She rests her head on you and will sometimes jump on the bed and fall asleep on top of you.”

It is a common trait for greyhounds, said Dr Alicia Fuller, general manager of Greyhounds as Pets NSW which helped with more than 700 adoptions in the 12 months to June.

“They are leaners, they like to stay in contact with you,” Dr Fuller said.

While the dogs have been adopted by individuals and families of all ages, she can see why they are a great option for young, busy people who don’t want to raise a puppy that needs to be house trained and chews everything.

“Older dogs take a little while to settle into new surroundings but when they do they are lovely calm pets,” she said adding that they are also very quiet.

“They don’t do a lot of barking so I think they’d be great in an apartment environment because they wouldn’t drive the neighbours mad.”
