After last night’s men’s match, the Blues take the field at CommBank Stadium in Sydney tonight for the women’s State of Origin opener, looking to defend their title against Queensland in a two-game series.
NSW centre Jessica Sergis said while they had the home-game advantage, they were expecting a strong game for the Maroons.
“That’s what we love about Origin, it’s the hardest intensity game that we play,” Sergis said.
“We’re wanting to perform and put on a show for our family here, and winning the first game – we need to win.”
Coach Kylie Hilder recently revealed the team line-up, featuring six debutants who will join the 13 players retained from last year’s triumphant side.
Among the newcomers are forwards Brooke Anderson and Ellie Johnston, along with backs Teagan Berry, Jaime Chapman, Taliah Fuimaono, and Jesse Southwell.
This strategic blend of experience and fresh talent demonstrates the Sky Blues’ commitment to maintaining their winning streak.
And along the way, they’ll inspire the next generation of NRLW stars.
“The more that we can perform and show little girls and boys how good it is to be an athlete and the opportunities we have now and the careers we can have, it’s incredible,” Sergis said.
“Growing up, we had female sports but not female rugby league teams, especially not being televised.
“My idol was Billy Slater, obviously he’s a male, I thought back then that I was never going to be having an opportunity to play rugby league.”
Sergis and teammate Millie Boyle have already given nine-year-olds Imogen Wynne and Amelia Smart some inspiration at the recent Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Origin Clinic.
“The Sky Blues are amazing players who inspire us. We want to grow up to be just like them,” Imogen said.
The Sky Blues have dominated the last five Origin games, boasting a 3-2 advantage with triumphant victories in 2018, 2019, and 2022.
