Lifeguards sounded the alarm at Bondi Beach Friday morning after a number of sharks was spotted close to shore while surfers were in the water.
Surf Life Saving was first alerted of the sighting by an ABC helicopter crew at around 9:30am after the sharks were sighted close to the surfing group.
The SLS notified the state operations team who radioed the Bondi lifeguards to get people out of the water.
“We were told there was a shark, and the helicopter was above looking for it. It was up to us if we wanted to stay in the water or just leave but we heard the alarm, so I think everybody just got the same feeling,” regular surfer Marco Ngoxuan said.
The French-Vietnamese national has been coming to Bondi Beach every day for the last four years and said he had only ever heard the shark alarm go off about four times.
“It’s always part of the risk of going out in the water. It happens maybe once a year. They have drones and everything now to improve safety, so it’s better than nothing,” Mr Ngoxuan said.
The news comes after a 25-year-old male was attacked by a white shark in the mid-north coast earlier this week.
