Heavy rainfall of up to 30mm is expected to dump on parts of Western Sydney this evening after storms drenched areas in regional NSW.
At 4pm on Tuesday, a severe thunderstorm warning was put in place for Greater Sydney, including the Blue Mountains and areas near Gosford and Wyong on the Central Coast as loud thunderstorms roll across the east coast.
In the Central Tablelands, Orange copped large hailstones as rain bucketed down in Wollongong and in parts of Western Sydney with heavy rainfall.
Many coastal suburbs witnessed a lot of bright lightning with light showers, which climate experts said is a result of clouds sitting higher in the sky.
“The higher the cloud base, the greater chance there is for the rain to evaporate before it hits the ground,” BOM meteorologist Melody Sturm said.
“These thunderstorms are not based that close to the ground. The closer to the ground they are, the more chance the rain has to fall.
“It depends how much moisture is in the clouds too.”
Ms Sturm said higher cloud coverage tends to occur inland more often, which is why many farmers struggle to get rain.
However, rain is dropping in most parts of the state at the moment with constant wet weather conditions brought on by La Nina.
“Tomorrow is still a bit of a humid day. There’s a high chance of showers,” Ms Sturm said.
“(It’s a) little bit windier, and there’s a slow change moving through (from the south) that could help make it feel a bit less humid (as) it’s a bit drier.”
Power outages are reported in areas across the northern end of the Central Coast, including Toukley, Budgewoi, Buff Point, Noraville, The Entrance North, Halekulani, Canton Beach, Norah Head, Magenta, The Entrance, and Doyalson
Power supply is expected to be switched back on around 8pm.
Local SES crews are reporting several incidents in Gwandalan with one resident reported as being trapped inside her home after a tree fell on her house during the storms.
Down the coast, a car veered off Willoughby Rd in Terrigal, slamming into a nearby scaffolding fence surrounding the front of a home.
Emergency services have not reported any injuries at this stage.
