The NSW road toll is off to a dreadful start with seven people being killed on the first weekend of the year.

Three people lost their lives in two separate single-vehicle crashes on country roads on Sunday after four people died on Saturday.

The yearly road toll stands at 11 just one week into 2019.

Two people were killed when a car crashed at Temora on Burley Griffin Way near Wagga Wagga last night.

North of Newcastle, an elderly female back seat passenger died and three other people were seriously injured after a car crashed into a tree at Tomago shortly after 5pm.

All four occupants were trapped for nearly an hour with the female passenger dying after she was freed.

Another female passenger sitting in the front seat was in a critical condition in hospital, while the male driver and a male back seat passenger are in serious conditions.

It is understood the four occupants were two couples travelling together.

On Saturday, a three-year-old child was killed in a car crash that left her mother and aunt seriously injured near Dubbo.

Police say the young girl was travelling in a small hatchback with two family members in Wellington when the car veered off the road and hit a tree.

In other crashes a man died and five people were injured — one seriously — when two vehicles collided head-on north of Grafton on Saturday, while two other men died in crashes at Young and Lucas Heights.
