THE sentencing hearing of a mortgage broker who supplied the eastern suburbs social scene with a white Christmas of an illicit kind, may be held behind closed doors.

Michael James Geering, who organised 63 drug deals across the peak of the party season in 2016, appeared before Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court on Monday but the proceedings were adjourned by Judge Clive Jeffreys because The Daily Telegraph had applied to access court documents and be present in court during the sentencing.

Geering’s Barrister Ben Clark told the court he opposed the application but did not offer any justification.

“I don’t think I need to put it any higher than that your honour,” Mr Clark said.

Judge Jeffreys made the decision to adjourn proceedings until early next year to allow The Daily Telegraph to be heard in court on why they should be granted access to the court documents and be present in court for the sentencing.

“There may be application for the court to be closed at that time,” he said.

“If the media want to they will be able to be represented at the time and make their submissions before me.”

Geering sold cocaine from his ocean view apartment at Coogee Beach or drove to meet customers, using “beer” as a code word in his texts when arranging the deals.

When police searched his Dolphin St apartment last Thursday they found several mobile phones, scales, small clip-seal bags and $42,650 in cash.

In court documents one customer texted, “Please mate. I promised them some beers at our Christmas lunch”.

The case will return to court in February next year.
