Second Harbour crossing a bridge to the future
State government sources yesterday confirmed original plans to build a second tunnel crossing have been scrapped in favour of what is sure to be a controversial multibillion-dollar project.
AN exact replica of the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be built alongside the current crossing in a radical plan to reduce congestion and boost tourism.
State government sources yesterday confirmed original plans to build a second tunnel crossing have been scrapped in favour of what is sure to be a controversial multibillion-dollar project.
Proponents of the second bridge plan last night told The Daily Telegraph a duplicated crossing would not only be a less expensive option, but would also ensure a monumental boost in tourist numbers.
On a sour note for motorists, tolls are expected to be introduced in both directions on the new bridge to pay for the millions of gallons of grey paint that will be needed in its yearly upkeep.
“Our famous bridge is already an iconic symbol of Sydney worldwide. This second bridge will clearly double the recognition of the Harbour City,’’ chief urban planner Archie Girder said.
An exact location for the crossing is yet to be determined, but it is understood either Luna Park or Kirribilli House will need to be demolished for the northern approach.
The final bridge site will be decided by a plebiscite, and work is due to begin in 2018.
