Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Mr Birmingham would continue working on important trade issues including the EU and UK Free Trade Agreement, but flagged further changes to his ministry in December.

Mr Morrison said the government would seek bipartisan support for their nomination of Mr Cormann to the OECD role to give him the greatest chance of securing the highly sought after position.

“We believe the OECD needs the sort of leadership that we think Australia and an Australian can provide,” he said.

“The OECD has played an incredibly important role on so many issues in which Australia has been a key participant.

“The base erosion in profit-shifting, the taxation of multi-nationals, all of these important international principles that govern and help drive our global economy.”
