Prime Minister Scott Morrison has used a keynote address to the party faithful in Sydney to declare he would like to see more women running for parliament at the next federal election.
Urging members gathered at the NSW Liberal State Council meeting in Sydney to begin building for the next state and federal elections, Mr Morrison said he wanted the NSW division to work with him to achieve greater female representation.
“I want to see at the next election more women in our parliament, and I want to see the NSW division work with me and my team to deliver that — on merit, that’s the key,” he said.
“But we’ve got to deliver it. No point in having targets when you don’t have a plan to meet them. We’ve got a target for growing jobs in this country. But we’ve also got a plan in creating those jobs.

“I come from the party organisation. I respect the party organisation.
“It’s not for me or my parliamentary colleagues or (Premier) Gladys (Berejiklian) and her parliamentary colleagues to be telling you, the members of the NSW division, how those issues should run in terms of how you should select candidates — that’s up to you — but we need to lift that representation and that’s your job.”
Earlier, Mr Morrison thanked MPs for their role in the party, paying special tribute to his predecessor Tony Abbott.
“He will be forever remembered as the leader that brought us back and put us back in to government and has set us this time of government where we are really changing Australian for the better,” Mr Morrison said.
