Footy star Sam Burgess and his estranged wife Phoebe have had some rare good news as they live a very public and sometimes difficult separation — the Sydney home they shared for almost four years has been sold, pocketing them a cool $1.2 million profit.
The former matrimonial mansion in Maroubra was bought in both their names in 2016 for $3.8 million.
There has been no price disclosure but sources say the home was sold for almost $5 million to a UK expat. A Christmas Eve handshake sale was formally notified last Friday.
The bullish sale formalises the couple’s October split, which appears permanent this time around.
The four-bedroom, two-storey French provincial home on one of Lurline Bay’s most desired streets ranked as Maroubra’s third priciest non-oceanfront sale in 2019.
It was marketed as “capturing the coastal breezes, the smell of the salt air, and the unbelievable coastal view”.
There was no comment from the family on Saturday.
Ms Burgess has been mostly based at her parents’ farm in the Southern Highlands, occasionally posting images of their children, one-year-old Billy Mark and Poppy Alice, who turns three later this month, to her 80,000-plus Instagram followers.
Burgess, who grew up in West Yorkshire, has been renting at Coogee. He has pleaded not guilty to intimidating his father-in-law at the Southern Highlands property last year.
He recently posted to his 347,000 followers that he was back working off-field at his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs after being forced into early retirement due to an ongoing shoulder injury.
There had been expectations for several months of the likely listing. The sale was secured by young estate agent Josh Ellison from Ellison Zulian Property, whose profile indicates he was a member of the Rabbitohs’ under-20s squad from 2014 to 2016. Josh’s father is Souths’ football manager Mark Ellison.
The couple bought the home around the time they were expecting their first child. They opted for Maroubra rather than staying at the Bondi Beach apartment owned by Burgess.
The couple, who had briefly separated after three years of marriage in Christmas 2018, had in happier times also looked at leaving Maroubra, spotted inspecting a trophy home at Dover Heights.
