CONTROVERSIAL property developer Salim Mehajer could be on the brink of bankruptcy because of one of the signature examples of his ostentatious lifestyle.

The flamboyant former Auburn council deputy mayor is already fighting battles on a number of fronts that have the potential to land him in jail, including electoral fraud charges and allegations he stalked his ex-wife.

He can now add bankruptcy proceedings to the list, thanks to the grand marble staircase in the foyer of his opulent Frances St, Lidcombe, home, which once featured in a music video for US rapper Bow Wow.

Mehajer didn’t pay Prime Marble & Granite’s invoice of $596,178 for making him the sweeping statement of a floating staircase.

The Greenacre company sued him, won its case, and the NSW District Court’s Judge Judith Gibson in October ordered Mehajer to pay up to almost $1 million — the cost of the staircase and about $400,000 to cover Prime Marble’s court costs.

Mehajer, 31, failed to pay the money and Prime Marble & Granite served a bankruptcy notice on him on November 3.

He’s been given until December 12 to pay the $1 million or be made the subject of bankruptcy proceedings in time for Christmas.

Mehajer is set to fight the move and is listed to front the Federal Circuit Court on December 12 for a hearing to have the notice set aside.

The staircase features among the photos and videos of four helicopters, white Ferraris and Lamborghinis, motorcycle outriders, drumming and ululating — and an unauthorised closed street — that documented Mehajer’s infamously opulent wedding in 2015 to Aysha Learmonth. She left him in 2016.

A bankruptcy order would put a severe dent in Mehajer’s ability to operate his property development empire and continue his jetsetting lifestyle.

He took to social media in August to brag about winning big on a bet at the McGregor v Mayweather fight, which he jetted to the US to watch from a ringside seat.

If he is bankrupted, Mehajer could need to get permission to travel overseas from the bankruptcy trustee that would pick apart his affairs and recover the money.

Mehajer’s parents declared themselves bankrupt in December 2016 after clocking up $10 million in unpaid tax debts.

He was charged with contravening an AVO relating to Ms Learmonth by allegedly following her in his Audi Q7 on November 19.
