DISGRACED former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer has been handed an 18-month good behaviour bond after being found guilty of intimidating his ex-wife when he emailed and messaged her in 2017.
Appearing in Burwood Local Court today via audiovisual link dressed in his prison greens Mehajer’s lawyer described his actions as that of a “sick puppy” hoping to “reconcile” his relationship with his now ex-wife Aysha Learmonth and no malice was intended.
Magistrate Jacqueline Trad disagreed finding Mehajer had engaged in domestic violence deliberating contacting his then estranged wife after sending her numerous emails and an Instagram message in November 2017.

“This is an allegation of domestic violence. The charge of intimidation is one which the community has an expectation, no matter who you are, is dealt with in a way which demonstrates to all those in the community that the offences of domestic violence will not be tolerated,” Magistrate Trad told the court.
“There was no actual threat of violence made through those messages but there was a clear impression left that what was being sent through this conduct involved a certain amount of menace.
“In that the accused was able to know what the victim was doing and when they were doing it.”
During submissions Mehajer’s solicitor Zali Burrows told the court her client was unlikely to reoffend as he had a new girlfriend and wanted to start a new life with her.
“He was sick puppy hoping they could reconcile and get back together,” Ms Burrows said.
“That is not the case anymore. He is now with a new partner and what she says in her letter to the court is that he has no interest in contacting her (Ms Learmonth).”
Mehajer had pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Mehajer is currently in jail after he was taken into custody last Friday after breaching his bail conditions and a good behaviour bond for an unrelated matters.
