Body-worn police camera footage has revealed how Salim Mehajer was so concerned about his appearance he used hairspray while grooming himself in front of the bathroom mirror during his arrest for breaching his bail earlier this month.

The vision was played at Parramatta District Court on Thursday as the disgraced former Auburn deputy mayor fought to vary his bail conditions so he could own a mobile phone and social media, particularly Instagram.

In the footage police knock on the door on June 3 and inform Mehajer he had breached his bail by contacting witness Hassan Kanj in the video played in court.

“Mate you’ve breached your bail,” a detective sergeant says.

Mehajer is wearing a white shirt and walks inside his palatial Lidcombe mansion with the officers to get changed.

His then-lover Melissa Tysoe is upstairs and Mehajer tells the officers he is not sure if she is dressed before she is told to do so.

The pair can then later be seen in the bathroom together. Mehajer appears to be wiping his face and doing his hair in the mirror — even pulling out the hairspray and using it.

At one point he is captured in the vision sitting in his spacious walk-in wardrobe. He tells the officers: “You guys just pick on me”.

Later in the vision a police officer tells him: “Any pants will do I’m not going to wait until you get a specific suit ready”.

“I can’t find pants that’s the issue,” Mehajer says in the video.

Mehajer is then driven to the police station where he was charged with breach of bail.

The 32-year-old had only completed an 11-month jail term for electoral fraud weeks earlier when he was arrested for contacting witness Kanj, who is connected to new charges Mehajer tried to get out of speeding fines by claiming someone else was driving his vehicle.

The Crown claimed Mehajer sent “threatening” emails to Kanj accusing him of breaking into his home which is an “automatic five-year jail term” and telling him, “kiss your kids for me”.

He was released a day later after telling the magistrate he’d been so confused by his many bail obligations he didn’t realise he wasn’t allowed to contact certain witnesses.

Mehajer appeared in court while the video was played dressed in a grey pinstripe suit and carrying a Givenchy briefcase/satchel.

The debate over the bail conditions has dragged over a number of weeks.

“This is going to go down in the record books … as the longest-running such matter in the court’s history,” Judge James Bennett said two weeks ago.

The bail review will return to court on Friday.
