When in Ireland do what the Irish do - and in this case it’s sample gin and vodka made from potatoes.
Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe was so impressed with the “honesty” of the liquor he tasted while working in Dublin last year that he bought into the company.
“I heard the story of The Muff Liquor Company first. An Irish musician that I work with every now and then, Lorraine O’Reilly brought it to my attention,” Crowe told the Sunday Telegraph, referring to the Irish singer who performed at his recent shows in Coffs Harbour.
“I guess I fell in love with the story of how a potato farmer had a hobby and how his
granddaughter wanted to legitimise the old man’s business,” he said.
“Then while I was working in Dublin on The Pope’s Exorcist, Lorraine put on a show for the crew and Laura Bonnor, the potato farmer’s granddaughter, had asked her to deliver me a Muff gift box.
“There’s so many Gins out there at the moment who try to blind you with their magical, botanical ingredients and they don’t actually taste like Gin.
“I liked the honesty of the products, so I started talking about it. The gin and vodka are distilled six times, making the liquid very smooth. The gin is like no other I’ve ever tasted, it’s sublime.”
This week during the Australian launch of The Muff, Bonner told the Sunday Telegraph she remembers writing Crowe a “little note” inside the gift box of products her friend Lorraine delivered.
“I was praying he’d post one tweet, never did I think for a second he’d invest,” she said.
“He’s a great man and I’m really grateful for the opportunity.
“It’s just fantastic. Russell has been making loads of cocktails and some very cheeky named ones too.”
Late last year Crowe - who joins Muff Liqour men Ed Sheeran, Jimmy Carr and Ronan Keating - posted a picture of a bottle of Muff gin with the words “Getting ready for 2023” on his twitter account which has almost three million followers. The star’s tweet has been viewed more than 700,000 times.
Bonner says Australians are known to enjoy premium hand crafted spirits.
“Not only that, they are very health conscious and aware of what they put in their bodies. Our liquor is made with natural botanicals which goes down a treat plus I haven’t met an Australian who doesn’t love Muff.”
