THEY may be cute but an influx of kittens arriving on the doorstep of a south west animal shelter is putting a strain on resources.
The warm weather has sent felines into a breeding frenzy and there are now about 100 cats waiting to be adopted at the RSPCA in Yagoona.
Shelter community education and training officer Adam Farrugia said summer’s warmth and long days meant cats bred at a faster rate.
“Our biggest issue over those times is having lots of them coming in at once.”
To deal with the influx the shelter has waived adoption fees for all cats and kittens until February 5. All felines are vaccinated, microchipped and desex.
Cat Protection Society chief executive Kristina Vesk said owners desexing their cats early was another way to reduce numbers.
The Sydney-based no-kill shelter, which sees its numbers swell from about 70 cats to 150 between December-March, advocates for pet owners to desex at four months of age.
One pair of cats can be responsible for 420,000 kittens in seven years if their offspring also breed.
