They are the local heroes ditching their togs for a pair of tongs – tasked with serving up the perfect snags for King Charles when he visits Western Sydney for a good old fashioned Aussie barbecue.
A team of lucky Surf Life Saving volunteers will serve up a royal sanger at a private BBQ in Parramatta, promising The Sunday Telegraph they will make sure His Majesty “get’s just the right amount of onions”.
While the life guards on cooking duty are admittedly “feeling the nerves a little” Patrol Captain and trainer of the Coogee section Callum Hawkins, are convinced they will be serving up the “best sausage the King’s ever had”.
“We live and breathe our BBQ,” the 29-year old Patrol Captain said. “They have to be cooked just right, have to make sure they aren’t too blackened.
“But the fact we get to hand the King himself a sausage, it’s a very exciting moment and that's going to be the big one.”
Also shaking up their usual role of tackling waves to taking on the heat of the barbie, will be Aimee Charles, 19, and Sarah Flynn, 53.
Originally hailing from England, Sarah Flynn, who has been a surf life saver for nine years at the Coogee patrol said this an extra special occasion.
“It’s a once in a lifetime occasion to get to meet the king, let alone hand him a sausage,” she said. “There’s a little bit of nerves but mainly excitement.”
The Western Sydney barbecue is being billed as an exclusive event to celebrate and showcase the cultural diversity of modern Australia with a focus on Western Sydney.
King Charles is expected to be presented with cultural “activations” and performances.
