Ron Medich goes from Sydney Harbour room with a view to prison cell where he can stew

RON Medich woke on Monday to panoramic views of Sydney from his Milsons Point unit. By nightfall the millionaire developer was in a grimy cell in “Darcy Block” at Silverwater’s Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre.

Medich found himself in his new digs after a jury that day found him guilty of the 2009 murder of ex-business partner Michael McGurk.

After he was formally convicted, Medich was handcuffed and bundled into a prison truck for transport to Silverwater.

On arrival about 4.30pm he was stripsearched, given prison greens and had a fresh mugshot taken.

As a new arrival he was given a customary meat pie and taken to Darcy Block.

The Daily Telegraph understands Medich is in protective custody because of his high-profile case and the fact he’s a multi-millionaire who could be targeted for extortion.

As a result he will have a cell to himself.

Medich will probably stay in his cell within Darcy block until he is sentenced. He will then be classified into A, B or C category. It is likely he will be classified as a B, medium security, and sent to a jail in regional NSW.

Once he is classified, Medich will most probably be put to work and could do anything from making Qantas headsets to laundry.

He has the potential to earn $23.10 to $70.55 a week — nothing to the man who, with brother Roy, owns 344ha of land at Badgerys Creek worth more than $40 million.

Medich was found guilty of ordering the murder of his former business partner Michael McGurk in 2009.

At Medich’s request, Scottish-born wheeler and dealer McGurk, 45, was shot dead in front of a young relative as he climbed out of his Mercedes near their Cremorne home on September 3, 2009.

Medich regularly spent hundreds of dollars a day shouting his mates to lavish lunches at his favourite restaurants.

His $88 million property portfolio included a $37 million Point Piper mansion where he was a neighbour of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and a $6 million luxury home on the French riviera which has been taken over by his estranged wife Odetta.

When he was convicted on Monday, property records show he still owned a prime 344-hectares of land at Badgerys Creek worth over $40 million with his brother Roy and another spread at Bringelly which the brothers are holding onto until the western Sydney airport is built.

The property developer divulged details of his lavish lifestyle in the Supreme Court last year as he sought to cry poor and block a retrial until he was awarded Legal Aid. His application was refused.

Last year he was spending $1356 rent a week for a swish apartment in Sydney’s Lumiere building despite buying a $5 million Milsons Point apartment with sweeping harbour views.

The year before he claimed to have an annual income of $325,826 from investments but paid $1500 in maintenance and had “other debts” of $260,000.
